Giveaway [closed]– Make Room: A Child’s Guide to Lent and Easter

For the past few years, we have been recommending Laura Alary’s Make Room: A Child’s Guide to Lent and Easter. My daughter’s godparents gave it to her for her (Lenten) birthday and we love it. I’m so thankful for Alary’s clear and lyrical explanation of Lent and Holy Week.  And I appreciate that it simplifies Lenten plans: you can essentially use this book as a guide for all your family activities during the season.

Because I think it’s so helpful, I contacted Paraclete Press to see whether they would be interested in giving away a copy on our blog. I’ve never done this before, so I was thrilled that they said “yes.” You can just comment below before next Tuesday to be entered into the giveaway.

I wrote a recommendation of this book two years ago.  Here are a few excerpts:

 

 

“In the book, Alary sets out a map for Lent, explaining in simple but lovely prose that Lent is for “making time,” “making space,” and “making room” for the kingdom of God in our everyday lives. She connects the seasonal rhythms of the natural world and the liturgical rhythms of the church calendar. The illustrations by Ann Boyajian are subtle and evocative, very appropriate to the subject matter.”

“I also really appreciate the overview she gives of Holy Week, explaining the darkness of Good Friday (and its liturgical traditions) in a way that is appropriate for children and yet reverent.  And, when Easter finally comes, I hope that we able to conclude along with the book: “We have made time. We have made space. We have made room. We are ready now. We are different. Everything is different. The whole world is new! It is Easter Morning!”

    I would love this book for my daughters, who are one and a half and 4. Some of our favorites are Maite Roche’s My First Pictures of Easter (for toddlers) and Tomie de Paola’s The Miracles of Jesus (for the 4yo, not explicitly Lenten but leads through Jesus’s ministry up to the resurrection of Lazarus) but it is really hard to find good Lent books for children!

    It would be lovely to have this—why is it so much harder to find Lent and Easter books than advent and Christmas books?! I love Maite Roche’s My First Pictures of Easter which (despite the title!) tells the story of Holy Week.

    I am interested because doing something with my kids has been the thing to help me to stay on track with the seasons. It’s harder now that we have one in college and two in high school; our 10-year-old doesn’t get to enjoy celebrating traditions as we used to do. I think this book might help us tie things together throughout the season of Lent.
