Originally, as penned by Charles Wesley, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” began instead “Hark, how all the welkin rings.” The version we have today came about through many revisions, including those by George Whitefield (who changed the couplet to our version today). Felix Mendelsohn’s melody — from a cantata composed to celebrate Gutenburg’s printing press — was paired with the lyrics by William H. Cummings.

God and sinners reconciled!”
